RTR (101) vs Charlottesville Derby Dames (120)
The Rocktown Rollers (RTR) went down to the wire with the visiting Charlottesville Derby Dames (CDD), but ended up on the short end of a 120-101 decision, May 22, in a women’s flat track derby bout dubbed “Mama Said Knock You Out”. With its first loss ever to Charlottesville, RTR fell to 2-2 on the year, while the Derby Dames improved to 3-2 on the year.
A WFTDA apprentice league, Rocktown got the lead on the opening jam, getting six points from Killnitzki to take a quick 6-1 lead. Over the next three james, Charlottesville outscored its hosts 12-2 for a 13-8 lead less than five minutes into the bout. From there, the bout went back and forth with RTR regaining the lead at 32-26 midway through the first period. The bout was tied at 40-all before the Derby Dames again making a run, this time 16-4 to make it 56-44 with just over two minutes remaining. However, the Rollers closed it with a 10-point jam, again from Killnitzki, to cut the margin to just 56-54 at the halftime break.
The Rollers jumped back into the lead on the opening jam on another 10-point run by Killnitzki and Bam Bam Brawler added four more on the next as Rocktown built its biggest lead of the bout at 68-56. After a Derby Dames’ injury forced a 10-minute delay in the action, CDD had an answer two jams later on a 15-point jam by B-2 Bomber to re-take the lead at 71-68. Then the battle ensued, as the lead changed hands five more times until the closing minutes as it was a 101-100 Rocktown lead with under five minutes to play. Then the decisive moments came, as CDD put together a 20-0 run in the final jams and came away with the 19-point victory.
Offensively for the Rollers, Killnitzki led with 53 points, 36 coming in the first half, while B-2 Bomber was the leading scorer for the Derby Dames with 50 points on her jams. “It was a bout of epic proportions,” Head Coach Bam Bam Brawler said. “The competitive rivalry between CDD and RTR is readily apparent and continues to grow with each season. We know that any time we take to the track against CDD that every point is going to matter, and we are going to have to fight for every single one. For a year, people have talked about Rocktown’s come-from-behind win at ExpoLand against CDD at the end of last season. It was not far from anyone’s mind and, with a hard-fought battle, both teams yet again found themselves in a match decided in the final moments.
“Whether you’re an avid fan, a new skater, or seasoned vet, these are the games that you prepare for,” Bam Bam continued. “The crowd could not have been better, the hits could not have been harder, and the intensity was full-throttle from the first whistle to the last. Derby doesn’t get much more exciting than that!”
The Rollers take to the road for the next two bouts, starting with a trip to Richmond, Va., to take on Mother State Roller Derby on Sunday, June 5. The bout will take place at Skateland of Richmond located at 5512 Hull St.
